Posted on 11/04/2008
12:33 a.m. ... Hetherington, running uncontested, will continue to hold the state representative seat in 125th District. He received 1,809 votes in Wilton, according to official results. ********* 10:02 p.m. ... John Hetherington received 184 absentee votes, according to the registrar of voters. ********* 6 a.m. ... The polls in Wilton are open and voting has begun. ********** BACKGROUND: (reported by Lauren Mylo) WILTON --With a whisper, John Hetherington admits he's been working on political campaigns since Dwight D. Eisenhower's run for president in 1952. "It was exciting being at the rallies and being electrified by the people who were there," said Hetherington, who's running unopposed for his fourth term as representative. "Although I worked as a corporate lawyer for most of my career I ran for local offices like town council and was on various committees." When the state underwent redistricting, Hetherington ran for the open seat in District 125 and won. He holds a B.A. from Yale University and a J.D. degree from Yale Law School and is an attorney of counsel with the law firm of Rucci, Burnham, Carta, Carello & Reilly, LLP. Hetherington grew up in Queens, N.Y. and said his first job at 16 was cleaning bird cages in a pet shop. His mother was a public school teacher and his dad had an independent law practice, and he said he relates to people who have to work for a living. "I know what middle class people have to deal with," he said. "We're very priviliged to live the way we do in New Canaan and Wilton." Because of this, one of his main goals for the next term is addressing the financial crisis. He supports a zero base budget, and he's against cutting human services and a tax increase. "I think it'd be a terrible mistake to raise taxes in this environment," he said. "I think we need to eliminate estate taxes because I think it's causing people to leave the state." Another priority is making sure everyone has health care and tweaking the Charter Oak plan, which he likes. Hetherington said his main hobby is sailing, and he has two children with his wife, Hope, whom he married in 1983. His son Kells runs a public radio station in the Aleutian Islands and his daughter Jane works for AmeriCares, an international relief organization.
