a gourmet spin on a comfort food favorite
Posted on 12/23/2009
By KARA O'CONNOR Villager Staff Writer WILTON -- The original comfort food with a gourmet spin is how MacDaddy's restaurant owner Robert Dunn best explains his new macaroni and cheese bar. "Lets be honest -- who doesn't love mac and cheese?" asked Dunn rhetorically. "It's a staple food that has been around for years. I just came up with a way to take it to the next level." Dunn opened up MacDaddy's Macaroni and Cheese Bar this past July 4 and says the Georgetown-based restaurant was an instant success. "This is a family-friendly place," said Dunn. "Teenagers, kids, moms, dads, they all love it. I think that's why it took off from day one." Dunn said he came up with the idea after he was in Manhattan, and stumbled on a small takeout place on the side of the road that dedicated its menu to mac and cheese. "I saw that little place in New York and thought that Wilton had nothing like it," said Dunn. "I wanted to add a place to the area that had great food but wasn't a hot dog, hamburger or pizza place." MacDaddy's has 27 different varieties of macaroni and cheese on its menu, from the original MacDaddy dish, which has American and cheddar cheeses, ground beef, thousand island dressing, dill pickles and onions to the Maclobo, which has fresh lobster, coconut, red curry, zucchini and asiago cheese. "I think that this place has something for everyone," said Dunn. "That's the appeal. Everyone likes the taste of mac and cheese and we add a special twist that makes mac and cheese a full, perfect meal." In addition to his MacDaddy's restaurant, Dunn also has a mobile MacDaddy's on wheels, which includes a full-service kitchen used for events, private parties, catering and more. He plans on turning MacDaddy's into a franchise in the next couple of years, he said. "I'm actually in the process of building three to five more units around the area," said Dunn. "I eventually want to put this concept up for franchise. My goal is to have a MacDaddy's Macaroni and Cheese Bar in every college town in America." Dunn said he is also continuing to add new recipes to his menu. At the moment, he is in the process of adding 23 more dishes, which would bring the menu selection up to 50 macaroni and cheese dishes. "Whether you are a mom and dad who want to bring your kids somewhere to eat that is new, or you are a teenager looking for a quick place to grab a bite, MacDaddy's has it all," said Dunn. "There really is a taste for anyone." MacDaddy's is located at 7 Main Street in Georgetown. To contact Robert Dunn call 203-544-7199 or visit www.macdaddyrestaurants.com.
