Police: Deli owner tried to arrange wife's killing

STAMFORD (AP) -- Stamford police say a city deli owner wanted his estranged wife dead and tried to hire one of his workers to kill her. Thirty-eight-year-old Thomas Esposito of Trumbull was arraigned on an attempted murder charge Thursday at Stamford Superior Court. Court officials say he posted $250,000 bail and is due back in court on March 16. An arrest warrant says Esposito asked one of his workers at Esposito's Delicatessen last fall how much it would cost for the worker to kill his wife. Police say the worker, who was said to have belonged to a gang in Mexico, didn't reply to Esposito. Police say Esposito had also threatened to put his wife into a wood chipper. The couple separated in May 2009 and divorce proceedings are pending. Esposito's lawyer declined to comment.
