Opinions mixed on Sunday liquor sales

HARTFORD (AP) -- Connecticut lawmakers are getting mixed opinions on whether to allow package stores and supermarkets to sell alcohol on Sundays. Some small groceries and supermarkets favor the idea, saying their customers are clamoring to buy beer on a Sunday. But the Connecticut Package Store Association opposes the bill, arguing Sunday sales will cost each store at least $14,000 a year and could cause 300 stores to go out of business. A legislative report on improving the state's competitiveness recommends allowing liquor stores and supermarkets to open on Sundays. It estimates Connecticut could receive an additional $7.5 million to $8 million in tax revenue. The package store association discounts that figure and says only chronic drinkers would buy more alcohol. The bill awaits committee action.
