FCIAC Boys Swimming -- Craig's two seconds lead Wilton to sixth-place finish
Posted on 03/11/2010
By STEVE GEOGHEGAN Villager Staff Writer GREENWICH -- John Craig showed he could hang with the big boys. The senior swimmer, competing against top-notch competition at the FCIAC Boys Swimming Championships, earned a pair of silver medals at the annual event on Thursday, March 4, at Greenwich High. Craig placed second in the 50 freestyle (22.15) and the 100 freestyle (48.70). Eric Minowitz of Greenwich captured both events with times of 22.11 and 48.57, respectively. Through Craig's efforts, the Warriors placed sixth out of the field of 11 teams with 196 points. Greenwich won its third straight FCIAC crown (39th in 40 years) with 408 points, Westhill-Stamford placed second with 308 points and New Canaan took third with 302 points. Wilton also got help from Jack Winslow, who placed fifth in the 100 backstroke (57.52), and Tim Lattimer, who took fifth in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.99). The 200 medley relay team of Winslow, Lattimer, Craig and Dan Mangan also placed fifth with a time of 1:44.25. "I thought they did very well," Wilton coach Todd Stevens said of his swimmers. "They positioned themselves well in the trials, which is what they needed to do. I think they swam faster in just about every opportunity they had. "We had three guys make the all-conference team in Craig, Lattimer and Winslow, who is a freshman, plus Mason Molina and Sean Higgins, both as freshmen, came in and scored in both of their events, and all three relays placed in the top eight," Stevens added. "I couldn't be happier so we'll see how that sets us up with states."
