Wilton Y Wahoos win Senior Open championships

MIDDLETOWN -- Not since 2005 have the Wilton Y Wahoos won the Senior Open Championships. But they accomplished just that on March 4-7 at Wesleyan Univerisity were 444 swimmers converged to compete. The Team was the overall Women's Champions by a commanding margin and was the combined Senior State Champions by 22 points. Shelby Fortin and Christian Higgins were the Individual High Point winners and Spencer Scrath was the Men's Distance Champ, which is awarded to the swimmer who scores the most points in the distance events. KC Moss broke the Connecticut and Resident records for the Girls 15/16 200 breaststroke with a time of 2:17.63. Christian Higgins broke the Connecticut State Record for the Boys 17/18 100 breaststroke with a time of 56.67. Even though the men's team was as dominate as the women's team, virtually all the boys swam unattached due to High School rules and could not score points for the team. It was the 13/14 boys who raced and scored points in all the relays that put the Wahoos into the Combined Team Title. These boys were, Sam Delise, Stephen Holmquist, Tommy Kealy, Bobby Lesko, Bobby McDowell, Jourdan Stewart and Chris Wilson. Top 12-finishes were achieved by the following: Winning the 50 free, 100 free, 200 free and 500 free(Jr. National Cut-4:52.34) was Shelby Fortin, who also placed second in both the 1000 free and 200 back and third in the 100 back. KC Moss won the 200 breast (CT and Res record and Jr. National Cut-2:17.63) and the 100 breast (Jr. National Cut- 1:03.82). She also came in second in the 200 IM, fourth in the 400 IM and fifth in both the 100 back and the 200 back. Sharon Ahearn placed second in the 400 IM, fifth in both the 200 breast and the 200 IM, sixth in the 200 back, seventh in the 1000, and ninth in the 100 breast. Jazzi Cooper placed third in the 200 fly, eighth in the 400 IM, and 11th in the 100 fly. Sophie Hornby placed fourth in the 1000, fifth in the 1650 and 11th in the 400 IM. Katy Luchansky placed fifth in the 100 free, sixth in the 500 free and eighth in both the 50 free and the 200 free. Megan Lattimer placed fifth in the 400 IM, seventh in the 200 breast, eighth in the 200 IM and 12th in the 100 breast. Taylor Byerly placed sixth in the 100 fly, and eighth in the 100 back. Caitlin Cole placed seventh in both the 200 IM and 400 IM, and 12th in the 500 free. Alissa LaFrenierre placed eighth in the 200 back. Morgan Scarth placed tenth in the 1650. Jenn Abbott placed 11th in the 200 breast. The following swimmers attained Y National Cuts; Shelby Fortin, KC Moss, Katy Luchansky, Caitlin Cole, Taylor Byerly, Sharon Ahearn, Sophie Hornby, Morgan Scarth, Alyssa LaFrenierre, Megan Lattimer, Jenn Abbott, Jazzi Cooper, and Maddy Irwin. The 2010 National YMCA Short Course Champioship will be held April 7-10, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
