Norwalk Hospital honors two local EMS providers

NORWALK

Dr. Michael Carius, chairman of the Emergency Department of Norwalk Hospital, and Dr. David Lorenz, an interventional cardiologist, praised local EMS providers recently at Norwalk Hospital for their life-saving efforts, according to a news release.

The American College of Emergency Physicians hopes to increase the public's awareness of local emergency medical services, and to recognize local emergency responders, the release states.

Alan Henschke, director of EMS at Norwalk Hospital, said that the Norwalk EMS received the award for their team response to a cardiac arrest in Norwalk last fall.

"Upon arrival, they found a middle-aged male in cardiac arrest receiving CPR by coworkers," Henschke said. " The patient was immediately defibrillated twice by Norwalk Hospital EMS. The patient regained a pulse and spontaneous breathing. The patient was then intubated and had therapeutic hypothermia initiated. Finally, a 12-lead EKG was obtained and an acute myocardial infarction was identified. The Norwalk Hospital Emergency Department was notified and the cath lab was alerted for primary angioplasty. The patient underwent primary angioplasty and has experienced a full recovery. The Norwalk Hospital EMS team honored for this team response included paramedic David Koch and EMT-intermediate Stephen Bloom."
