City firefighters rescue woman from condo fire
Posted on 07/22/2010
By TOM EVANS Times Staff Writer STAMFORD -- A crew from Stamford Fire & Rescue rescued a woman from a smoke-filled, third-story window of a condominium complex at 102 Pine Hill Ave. at about 9 p.m. Wednesday night, according to a fire official. According to Lt. Sean Daly, public information officer for SF&R, a crew from Truck 1 ascended a ground ladder to the third-floor window of the five-unit complex and removed the victim -- who was hanging out of that window -- down the ladder to waiting Stamford Emergency Medical Services personnel. She was then transported to Stamford Hospital. The woman apparently suffered from smoke inhalation, and was admitted to the intensive-care unit at the hospital, according to Terry Shay, deputy fire marshal. Capt. Michael Terenzio of SF&R said he was pleased with the response and cooperative effort of all first responders on scene. "This was a good example of paid firefighters working with volunteers," Terenzio said. Attempts to update the woman's condition with Stamford Hospital on Thursday were unsuccessful. Terenzio said he thought the 64-year-old woman was "doing fine" after being treated for smoke inhalation. None of the 40 firefighters on scene -- 30 from SF&R, 10 from Glenbrook -- were injured in the blaze that was contained on the first floor laundry room of the condo unit, according Terenzio. Daly added that "smoke damage was throughout the second and third floors." "Unfortunately there's no new information (on the possible cause of the fire)," Shay said Thursday afternoon. "We're still doing interviews with potential witnesses, and the investigation by the fire marshal's office continues." The SF&R rescue was the only one necessary for the fire, which was called in to 911 at 8:55 p.m. Wednesday. Daly said Glenbrook Fire Engines 32 and 34 were on the scene within four minutes of the call, and units from Glenbrook, Central, Shippan, Woodside and South End fire stations "followed quickly."

Lets let Pavia know that this can and will work with full coverage 24/7 by the crews already stationed at engines 6,7,8, and 9 since the volunteers "cant guarantee a response". (their own chiefs words!)
