Wilton tourney team returns from Cooperstown
Posted on 07/22/2010
Contributed Story After winning 10 of their first 14 games, the Wilton 10s Tournament Baseball Team, managed by John D'Elisa and coached by Kevin Dooley, traveled to historic Cooperstown, New York, to play in the Cooperstown Baseball Classic. Dubbed "The Ball at the Hall", the five-game wood bat double elimination tournament featured 11-U teams from upstate New York, Brooklyn and Pennsylvania. Wilton highlights of the weekend included the teams' first ever triple play executed by Matthew Rubsam and Dillon Lifrieri, and strong pitching by Wilton's "fab four" staff of hurlers Matt D'Elisa, Griffin Klinga, Will Suchy and Ben Rusin. Offensively, the team was led by hitters Ian Filaski, Quentin Andersen and Matt D'Elisa. Defensive standouts included center fielder Chris Birch (who threw a runner out at first from center field), catcher Jack Dooley, first baseman Steffen Nobles, and left fielder Alex Acosta-Rua. Following the tournament, Wilton players and their families enjoyed touring Cooperstown; one of many highlights of the trip was the group's visit to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. After their fine performance in Cooperstown, the boys returned home to quickly regroup and play in the 2010 Shelton National " Little Fellows Baseball Classic" tournament. This tournament features games versus top-caliber opponents from Connecticut and is played throughout July.
