Gardner wins Republican registrar race

By KARA O'CONNOR

WILTON -- Incumbent Republican Registrar of Voters Tina Gardner may not have had the support from the Republican Town Committee, but the majority of the town's Republican voters backed her in Tuesday's primary election.

Gardner, who filed a petition to appear on the primary ballot, received 755 votes on Tuesday in the Republican registrar race, while newcomer Mary Arbisi netted 510. In May, Arbisi was nominated by the RTC to represent the party.

"I was very confident the Republicans in town would support me and they did," said Gardner after learning of the results. "I thank them and the people I work with."

RTC chairman Al Alper said he is looking forward to working with Gardner.

"I fully expect a terrific working relationship with Tina and moving forward," he said. "I hope the discussions we had during the campaign will help us find a common ground to move the party forward."

Alper said that even though the RTC nominated Arbisi for the position, there are no hard feelings on either side.

"At the end of the day, the RTC represents the Republicans in Wilton and they have spoken," said Alper. "We will do our best and work our hardest to ensure a terrific relationship."

Gardner said she is happy the election is finally over.

"It was so hot out and really tiring," said Gardner. "It's finally over and I'm glad that I can get back to work in the registrars' office."

Congratulations to Tina and thank you to those level- headed Republicans who voted for her and listened to reason instead of incendiary and unfounded comments from the RTC

Could not be happier with these results !! Tina was the only choice and the RTC should be ashamed of themselves for trying ONCE AGAIN to throw a very qualified incumbent under the bus .... Hope to be invited to the Apology Party when the RTC chairman and BOS RTC pitt bulls et al come to their senses ................. stop blaming Tina for the Bruschi loss !! The bitter salvo was WRONG.

RTC Chairman should learn a lesson from this primary. Bullying doesn''t go over well with Wiltonians. Smearing someone in the local paper isn''t a good strategy to garner suupport for a new candidate, albeit a good solid citizen like Mary Arbesi. Let''s hope Mary can get involved in other ways for the Republican party, and Tina can continue to serve the town as registrar. As for the RTC, maybe it''s time for SOME NEW BLOOD as Chairman, before you further alienate your Republican base in town???
