Graffiti vandals strike at Merwin Meadows

WILTON -- Spray-painted graffiti found at Merwin Meadows early last Thursday morning is under investigation, according to Wilton Police.

Capt. John Lynch, of the Wilton Police Department, said the graffiti was discovered around the bathroom area at the park by a Wilton Police Officer.

According to police, the graffiti was most likely put up Wednesday evening, the same night that two teens were issued infractions for alcohol-related charges at a house party in the same area.

"We are not sure if the party and the graffiti are related," said Lynch. "It was right about the same time, but it's hard to say if they are connected."

Lynch said Merwin Meadows is an area that is prone to vandalism.

"We have had incidents like this at this area before," said Lynch. "In fact, this area was just re-painted white to cover up other graffiti that was there."

Lynch said the police department is going to patrol the area more frequently and put lights on around the bathroom area at night to try and prevent any other incidents of vandalism from occurring.

"It's dark around the area, so no one would be able to see someone drawing graffiti around that area," said Lynch. "That is why we are putting lights up there, so it's easier to see anyone trying to vandalize the area."

According to Lynch, the spray-painted graffiti is various random pictures and words, nothing that is specific to a group or person of interest.

"We don't recognize this type of tagging," said Lynch. "A lot of people walk around this area, so it really could have been anybody."

Lynch said there are currently no suspects in the case, and it is still open. Anyone with information should call the Wilton Police Department.
