McDonagh, Murphy ready for U.S. Amateur

Tommy McDonagh and John Murphy are getting ready for one of the biggest weeks of their golfing careers.

Both Wilton natives are heading out to the West Coast to compete at the prestigious US Amateur Championships at Chambers Bay Golf Course in University Place, Washington, just south of Tacoma.

The event begins on Monday, August 23 and runs through Sunday, August 29. This will be the first USGA event ever played at Chambers Bay, which will also host the 2015 US Open.

McDonagh, now a resident of Norwalk who plays out of Shorehaven, and Murphy will be aiming for a title previously won by PGA Tour players such as Tiger Woods (1995 & 1996), Matt Kuchar (1997) and Ricky Barnes (2002).

Cameron Wilson of Rowayton will also be playing in the event. Wilson and McDonagh are members at Shorehaven Golf Club in Norwalk.

Brian Murphy, the younger brother of John Murphy, just missed joining the group of locals after shooting a 142 at qualifying at New Haven Country Club on Aug. 9.

McDonagh qualified on Aug. 8, finishing second at Wee Burn Country Club in Darienwith a two-round total of 146. John Murphy qualified at Manhattan Woods Golf Club in West Nyack, N.Y., on Aug. 3, scoring a 141 over 36 holes.

McDonagh tees off at 8:05 a.m. in the first round on Monday while Murphy goes off at 7:15 a.m. in the tournament's first tee time.
