Cancer survivor to speak at hospital

NORWALK

Norwalk Hospital plans to host a presentation by the renowned physician, cancer survivor and author Wendy S. Harpham, M.D., on Sept. 22 at 6 p.m. in the Richard S. Perkin Auditorium of Norwalk Hospital. Registration is at 5:30 p.m.

Harpham is an internal medicine physician, wife and mother of three children who was diagnosed with a chronic form of non-Hodgkin's lymphoma at the age of 36, according to a news release.

Since being diagnosed, she has lived through seven recurrences of cancer and has devoted her career to educating and inspiring cancer patients and physicians about how to get excellent cancer care and live life as fully as possible despite a cancer diagnosis.

Harpham coined the term "Healthy Survivor" and has been at the forefront of the cancer survivorship movement. She has authored seven books, including "When a Parent Has Cancer" and "Happiness in a Storm: Facing Illness and Embracing Life as a Healthy Survivor," is a nationally recognized keynote speaker at cancer conferences, maintains an active blog and writes a regular column for the publication "Oncology Times."

Cancer survivors, their families and friends are invited to attend the presentation titled, "Happiness in Storm: Embracing Life as a Healthy Survivor."

Using personal stories and humor, she will offer patients practical philosophy and science-based knowledge on how to get good care and live as fully as possible despite illness and, sometimes, even because of it. This evening talk is co-sponsored by the Connecticut Chapter of the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
