Popular Wilton restaurant suffers heavy damage in morning fire
Posted on 12/13/2010
By KARA O'CONNOR Villager Staff Writer WILTON -- The cause of an early morning fire at a Wilton restaurant is still under investigation, according to Wilton Fire Department officials. Chief Paul Milositz of the Wilton Fire Department said that fire officials were on the scene around 6:20 a.m. after the fire was reported by a construction worker. "The fire was reported by a construction worker who was working on the bridge next to Porotofino's Restaurant and immediately called the department," said Milositz. "Officials were on scene minutes after the call was made -- around 6:20 a.m. -- and the fire was put out and under control around 7 a.m." New Canaan and Westport fire crews responded to the mutual aide call. According to Milositz, there was extensive damage in the back of Portofino's -- where the kitchen area is located -- but it is still undetermined if the fire started in the kitchen. "There was significant damage to the food preparation and kitchen areas in the building," said Milositz. "Less damage was done to the restaurant area, but the business is going to be closed for some time." Milositz said the building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. Fire Marshall David Kohn is still on scene and the fire is currently under investigation, he said.

I am a Wilton Resident and avid scanner listener. I am disapointed that Wilton would not call a closer Department instead had to call N.C and Westport which is a lot further than other departments.
I hope they would not do that if it was my house.

The georgetown fire department is completely volunteer, meaning that Wilton would have to wait for their volunteers to be paged out, respond from their buisnesses or homes to the fire house, man the engine, and then respond. Westport is a paid department, and New Canaan is part paid part volunteer. Therefore these two departments can respond immediately to a request for mutual aid. Having to wait for volunteers could add 5+ minutes to the response time. If Joe Jones is correct and Weston was unable to get enough volunteers to man an engine, you can see some of the potential problems with relying on volunteer departments for mutual aid.
I dont think you should be questioning the decisions made by the brave firefighters form Wilton, especially when it is clear you have no idea what you are talking about. Wilton FD was on scene in minutes and did a great job to save as much of the building as they could.

You really do a disservice to the brave members of the Wilton FD who responded to this fire within minutes and appear to have done a great job saving as much of the building as they could. You clearly have no idea what you are talking about, and should do a little more research before you plug a couple of frequencies into your scanner and armchair quarterback an emergency response.
