On The Record — An interview with Katie Wingertzahn

The Wilton High School softball team got off to its best-ever start, bursting out of the season with a 3-0 record. A big reason for that early season success was the bat of sophomore outfielder Katie Wingertzahn, pictured at right, whose seventh inning, bases-loaded double drove in three runs and gave the Warriors a 3-1 win over Bethel in its season-opening game. From there, Wilton pulled out another tight win in game two and then defeated New Canaan, 6-3, on Tuesday to complete the season-opening trifecta of wins. After Wilton's win over New Canaan, Wingertzahn took time out to go "On The Record" with the Wilton Villager about things both on and off the softball diamond.

The Wingertzahn File

Name: Katie Wingertzahn

Grade: Sophomore

Parents/Siblings: Parents Tom and Tammy; Sisters Emily (14) and Maggie (6)

Other Sports/Activities: Varsity basketball.

Wilton Villager: What's the best thing about your school?

Katie Wingertzahn: I'd have to say the sports. I like how the coaches really know you, they're not just coaches, they're friends.

WV: If you could change just one thing about your school, what would it be?

KW: I'd probably make lunch longer.

WV: What was the game-winning hit over Bethel like for you?

KW: I had never won a game before, so I was so shocked. I was so happy and my teammates were very supportive. I'm just happy the team won. It's all about the W.

WV: Did anybody give you any advice as you went to bat in that situation?

KW: Coach (Bruce Cunningham) says just to relax and keep your head in it and don't worry about anything. I just took his advice.

WV: Can you describe the excitement that is within the Wilton softball program right now?

KW: Right now, because we're (3-0), we're very excited. We've got a great team this season and I think everybody is generally happy. We love to be out here playing.

WV: What do your teammates mean to you?

KW: They're like family. I can tell them anything and we all hang out together.

WV: If this is a lacrosse town, why didn't you play lacrosse?

KW: I just never got into lacrosse. I played soccer for a while, but it was just too similar (to lacrosse) so I tried softball and I just loved it.

WV: What's your perfect breakfast?

KW: Scrambled Eggs. (Pause). With lots of ketchup.

WV: What's the one thing everybody knows about you?

KW: I love to play music. I play guitar and piano.

WV: What's something that nobody knows about you?

KW: I didn't start playing softball until seventh grade.

WV: When was the last time you cried watching a movie? And what movie was it?

KW: It was probably about a year ago. It was the movie "Click." That's pretty shameful right there.

WV: What scares you more than anything else in this world?

KW: My dad, when he's angry at me.

WV: If you could go back in time and witness anything in history, what would it be?

KW: Woodstock. The original one. I'm just a big music fan.

WV: Hollywood has called and wants to make a movie of your life. What's the title and who is the star?

KW: I'll have to go with what (my teammates) always call me and call it, "A Day In the Life of a Red Head." I'd have to have Amanda Bynes star in it.
