WILTON Seven of the 14 Wilton residents who were competing in this year's NCAA lacrosse tournaments are still alive, including one who has already advanced to her final four.
Kate Fowler, the sophomore goaltender who has started 19 of 20 games for Hamilton College this spring, gave up just 13 goals in two games as the advance to the NCAA Division III women's Final Four.
After her team was awarded a first-round bye, Fowler made 12 saves in the Continentals' 13-6 win over Colby College in the second round.
One day later, she stopped eight shots in a 9-7 victory over Middlebury.
Fowler, who is 18-1 this season, has given up just 6.42 goals per game while leading Hamilton to its first-ever NCAA Final Four.
Fowler and her Hamilton teammates will face Salisbury, with its 22-0 record, on Saturday in Salem, Va.
In Division I men's play, three of the four Wilton-ites are still alive, including Steve Giannone whose second-seeded Virginia team eked out a 10-9 win over the University of Maryland-Baltimore County.
Giannone, a junior midfielder, scooped up one ground ball in the win as the Cavaliers advanced to this weekend's quarterfinal game against Maryland. Game time is noon on Saturday and will be televised on ESPNU.
Joe Somerdyk of Navy and Bill Curry at Ohio State both stayed alive in their games. Navy stunned No. 4 North Carolina, 8-7, while Ohio State upset No. 8 Cornell, 15-7.
Neither player saw action in their respective games and nor did Brad Kamedulski, a Wilton native who plays for Cornell.
In the women's Division I field, the University of Pennsylvania's Kaitlyn Lombardo had an assist and a ground ball from her midfielders position as the Quakers defeated Colgate, 16-7, in a first-round game to advance to Saturday's quarterfinal game against Boston University.
North Carolina, featuring a red-shirted Caitlyn Young, upset fourth-seeded Virginia, 11-7, to advance to quarterfinal action against Syracuse.
In men's Division III action, two Wilton players are still alive as the tournament heads into the quarterfinals on Wednesday.
Pete Smith of Middlebury saw his team defeat Bowdoin, 10-7, on Saturday in a second round game to advance. Smith, a sophomore attack, had a goal, two assists and six ground balls in the victory. Middlebury plays Cortland State on Wednesday.
Connor Gerken, a senior defenseman at Washington College, was a starting defender for his Shoremen as they defeated No. 4 Lynchburg, 12-9. Gerken had two ground balls in the victory.
Ohio Wesleyan, featuring Steve Fowler and Kevin McMahon, went 1-1 in the first round two rounds of the tourney. It defeated Kenyon, 12-8, in the first round before dropping an 11-4 decision to undefeated Salisbury in the second round.
Fowler had a goal in the win while McMahon was hit for two penalties while in the loss Fowler had a goal and an assist and McMahon had a ground ball.
St. Lawrence, featuring Thomas Hollingsworth as the starting goalkeeper, was defeated 13-9 by Western New England College in their second round game.
Bryant University head coach Mike Pressler, meanwhile, is still waiting for his Final Four semifinal contest against LeMoyne on Saturday.
