WILTON The Wilton Blue U-9 boys travel soccer team had a sensational start to the spring season, defeating Trumbull United, 6-0.
Wilton set the tone of the game early with strong defense provided by James Mannix, Sean Breslin and Joseph Berrafati, backed up by the shutout play of Jack Ginsburg in goal in the first half and Peter Koch in the second.
A.J. Hoffman kicked off the scoring off an assist by Griffin Klinga. Peter Koch scored next after a strong team display of downfield ball movement and crossing passes, followed by a goal from Michael Mancuso, off an assist by Jackson Doggett.
Rounding out the scoring for Wilton were Ryan Collins, Griffin Klinga and Sean Breslin, supported by strong defensive and offensive play of Emmet Lane, Chris Birch and Harrison McCool.
Girls U-11 A
With only one practice under their belts, the Girls U-11A team did an impressive job against the Ridgefield team, but fell by a 2-0 score.
Jayne Maccio, Laine Parsons, Melissa Luse and Haley English kept the Ridgefield goalie busy with a consistent push upfield and multiple shots on goal.
Outstanding offensive work was also displayed by Erin Cunningham, Alex Lamantia, Kristen Godin and Lindsey Cassone. Hannah Maatallah, Makenna Pearsall, Julia Davatzes, and Bridget Saxe expertly defended goalies Ady Fleitz and Casey Tucker, allowing only two goals.
Girls U-9
The Wilton White girls were back in action on Sunday, holding Old Greenwich to a hotly contested 1-1 tie.
Carolyn Yee scored the first goal of the spring season after a persistent battle with the Old Greenwich defense and a great assist by Julia Vitarelli.
The scrappy Wilton offense, consisting of Vitarelli, Elizabeth Healy and Bria Albanese, provided many solid drives from mid-field and worked hard to score.
On defense, Isabella Tudisco, Elizabeth Wall and Catie Frankel applied constant pressure to the opposition. The tenacious trio effectively worked to keep the ball in Wilton territory and the offense from scoring.
Ashley Vitarelli provided outstanding dual support on both offense and defense, with many great saves near the goal. Eliza Ward and Meghan Keating both had excellent turns at goal, rebuffing Old Greenwich at every scoring attempt.
Boys High School
On a chilly Sunday afternoon, Wilton took on Westhill and, in a close and foul-prone game, beat the Stamford-based team, 2-1.
Westhill controlled the midfield for most of the first half and had several chances, but the Wilton backs and particularly the goalie, Robbie Serenbetz, played well enough to keep the ball out of the net.
Wilton's Brian Lowery and Ali Sadeghi were persistent on the attack, and before halftime a Wilton attack resulted in a well-taken goal by Mac Herlyn.
In the second half, Westhill began to make short passes and made more chances, and finally equaled the score with a nice header.
For the next 20 minutes both sides had chances, until a piece of individual brilliance by Wilton's Lucas Ruffel put Wilton up 2-1.
Westhill had more chances, but Gabe Querios and Will Boyer were solid in defense, as was goalie Todd Seamens, and Wilton hung on to win.
