Wilton High Notebook — Golfers win first three matches



Staff Report

WILTON — The Wilton Warriors golf team got off to a 3-0 start on the season, using a plethora of players to do so.

John Resch and Nick Bottcelli shared medalist honors with 43s during the Warriors second match of the season on Thursday, April 3.

Wilton had 176 to Bassick's 280 and Harding's 302. Chris Klein and Marshall Stock both shot 45s while Jack Matthews scored a 46.

Then, on Wednesday, Wilton (155) routed Stamford (180) and Norwalk (246) to stay undefeated.




Brian Murphy was the medalist after carding a one-over par 36 at Oak Hills. Jim Kachadoorian shot 38 and Will Herndon 39 for the Warriors while Marshall Stock fired a 42 and Jack Mathews scored a 44.

Boys Lacrosse

Pete Johnson netted six goals and added one assist for the Warriors, who bounced back from their tough loss against Ridgefield and improved to 2-1 overall with a 14-3 win over Fairfield-Warde.

Pete McMahon also had a solid game with three goals and four assists while Mike Francia also had a hat trick and one assist.

Wilton's other key contributors in the victory were Harrison Hess (1 goal, 1 assist), Ray McSpirit (1 goal), Mike Shagi (2 assists), Chris Kozlowski, Matt Dunn and Vinnie Cannon (1 assist apiece). James Fuller (6 saves) and Devyn Jefferies (4 saves) split time in goal for the Warriors.

Baseball

Back to back wins last week moved Wilton to 2-1 before Wednesday's loss to Darien.

Aaron Shapiro's bases loaded RBI infield single plated Ryan Phillips with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Warriors their first victory of the season, a 1-0 win over Danbury on Monday.

Kurt Marut (1-1) pitched a one-hitter with 10 strikeouts and five walks. Chris Judge went 2-for-3 to lead Wilton.

On Tuesday, in a 6-4 win over New Canaan, a three-run fifth inning, highlighted by a two-run single by Bashar Nabulsi and an RBI single by Sam Fuentes, put the Warriors ahead for good as they secured their second win in as many days.

Austin Gambee (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings in relief for the win. He scattered three hits and struck out six.

Fuentes went 3-for-3 with two RBIs and Nabulsi, Chris Judge (RBI) and Steve Marino chipped in with two hits apiece.

Boys Tennis

The Warriors raised their record to 2-0 with a road win over the Westhill Vikings.

Those who scored singles wins were Steve Boreen at No. 2 (4-6, 6-3, 6-1), Mac Keers at No. 3 (6-3, 6-7, 7-6) and Garrett LeDonne at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1).

Both doubles teams were victorious for Wilton as John Hoag and Todd Seamans scored a 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 win at No. 1 and Chase McReynolds and Austin Schaefer secured the win at No. 2, 6-1, 6-1.

The Warriors had also shut out St. Joseph 7-0 in their season opener Wednesday in Trumbull. Singles winners included Dan Fieber at No. 1 (6-1, 6-1), Boreen at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2), Keers at No. 3 (6-0, 6-0), LeDonne at No. 4 (6-1, 6-1) and Brian Richman at No. 5 (6-0, 6-0).

At No. 1 doubles, Hoag and Seamans scored a 6-0, 6-1 victory and at No. 2 doubles, McReynolds and Schaefer earned a 6-1, 6-0 win to round out Wilton's scoring.

Girls Tennis

The Warriors stumbled out of the gate with a 1-3 record.

During Monday's match, a 7-0 loss to undefeated Fairfield Ludlowe, the doubles team of Alana Ricca and Brianna Turk were the only Warriors to get a set off an opponent.

Boys Track

The Warriors defeated host team Fairfield Ludlowe (75-73), Greenwich (80-67) and Central (73-64) to open their season.

Danny Prospect finished first in the 3,200 followed by Walker Jenkins as the duo turned in a time of 10:33. Chris Pierce captured the 1,600 (5:14) with Tim Becker finishing a close second (5:15).

The 4x800 relay team of Jenkins, Robert Serenbetz, Prospect and Jeff Prescott placed first (9:15) and the 4x400 relay team of Ali Sadegi, Darren Dillon, David Forsey and Prescott also took first (3:53).
