NORWALK Norwalk River Rowing Association's Youth Racing Team traveled to Boston for 2000-meter match races Sunday morning, April 27, on the Charles River Basin and took multiple wins in multiple categories.
The boys novice teams took second and third place in Boston.
The first novice eight placed a solid second with their time of 6:45.05. Wilton athletes in this boat included Ryan Duffy, Mike Squiteri, Corbitt O'Connor, Matt Lamonte, Jeff Mastrianna, Harrison Rappaport and Jordy Winslow.
The second novice eight came in third in their race with a time of 7:48. Wilton athletes in this winning boat included Mike Tudisco, Will Wassmer, Geoff Cushman, Charlie Watkins, Scott Yanoff and Stefan Lemonte.
The boys JV with Luke Shannon (Coxain), Charlie Bartlett, Matt Yanoff, Derek Emerick and Ben Stout all from Wilton was in the tightest race of the day, finishing third by .3 seconds.
The girls' novice eight, featuring Kelsy Brown, Meghan Collins, Mary Willis and Katie Hanson, all from Wilton, finished a strong third in 8:15.2
The girls' varsity four with Tina Musilli (Captain), Delaney Foley and Katherine Apuzzo from Wilton rowed a well-fought race and took fifth with their time of 8:17.6.
The girls' novice eight, featuring Kelsy Brown, Meghan Collins, Mary Willis and Katie Hanson all from Wilton, finished a strong third in 8:15.2
A nearly all Wilton boys boat, including Aidan Lane, Michael Gurliacci, Sebastian Van Eck with Emily Bazilian as the coxain rraced in the boys' varsity, which rowed with a last-minute lineup and finished fourth in the pack in 6:15.54.
A few weeks before Boston, the NRRA trekked to New Jersey to take part in the Mercer Sprints.
The NRRA Boys Novice Quad captured a gold medal in NRRA's sculling debut at the Mercer Sprints and ISA Sculling Championships heldat Mercer Lake.
The quad of Aki Tas (Darien), Charlie Bartlett (Wilton), Derek Emerick (Wilton), and Krishna Horrigan (Wesport) easily dispatched powerhouse Malvern Prep "B" by 16 seconds in the 1500-meter race, six-boat race.
The Boys Lightweight Four edged out Blair Academy by a length, earning a silver medal. The four of Tom Cody (Wilton), Lane Brokaw (Darien), Clay Baldo (Ridgefield), and Ben Stout (Wilton) was coxed by Luke Shannon (Wilton). The Lightweight Four is a varsity event, meaning a top-three finish at the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships in May will qualify for crew for a trip to the Youth National Championships in June.
In the closest race of the day, the Boys Varsity Eight was just clipped out of the medals by Yorktown High School, missing the mark by 0.54 seconds. Connor Boyd (Ridgefield) coxed the crew of Tim Foley (Wilton), Gus Vergara (Ridgefield), Mike Labine (Darien), Gordon Thompson (Wilton), Tom Liederbach (Ridgefield), Mike White (Wilton), Jake Maguire (Darien), and Frank Meade (Darien).
The Boys Second Novice Eight of Jon Massari (Wilton), Evan Boliakis (Norwalk), Jeff Mastrianna (Wilton), Scott Yanoff (Wilton), Sam Oster (Norwalk), Corbitt O'Connor (Wilton), Jeff Cushman (Wilton), John McGarry (Darien), and Mike Tudisco (Wilton) held off the Mercer Junior Rowing Club for a bronze medal.
The Girls Varsity Four of Dorothy Hallberg (Waccabuc, N.Y.), Tina Musilli (Wilton), Delaney Foley (Wilton), Laura Cappio (Armonk, NY), and Marissa Morgan (Wilton) finished fourth in their heat.
The girls novice four of Maggie Robertson (Wilton), Meghan Collins (Wilton), Samantha Curt (New Canaan), Nicole Buongiono (New Canaan), and Liz Jenkins (Norwalk) raced up in the Junior Varsity level and placed fifth in their race of seven boats.
The Boys Junior Varsity Eight, coxed by Emily Bazilian (Wilton) and powered by Ben Stout, Michael Gurliacci (Wilton), Aiden Lane (Wilton), Brendan Keevan (Wilton), Sebastien Van Eck (Wilton), Matt Yanoff (Wilton), Krishna Horrigan, and Jeff Mastrianna placed seventh.
